how do you make sure your first sex is good?

how do you make sure you do it "good" because i dont know since im only 14, but my girlfriend put a condom in my sporran for my kilt before i went to the school dance... (if you never heard of a sporran or a kilt google it) and i only found it when i was getting money for a bottle of water because it was boilling in there. im not saying im going to have sex yet, i just want to know, are there any things to avoid?
